Type Locality and Naming

The type sections are in Nenjiang County, Heilongjiang Province. Type section for the Lower part of formation is located in the Sankuanggou North area. Type section for the Upper part is the Bazhan area (the upper part of the formation) and (the lower part of the formation),. It was named by Ma Jiajun et al., in 1963, and was cited first publicly by the Compiling Group for the Regional Stratigraphic Chart of Heilongjiang Province (1974).


Lithology and Thickness

Clastics. Basal part of the formation consists of variegated metamorphosed conglomerates. Lower part is composed of yellow-green clayey siltstone, intercalated with feldspar-rich greywacke. Upper part is composed of grey shale, grey-green calcareous and silty shales and grey slate. Total thickness is over 1897 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Disconformable contact with the underlying Xiaohelihe Gr. Coeval with Linjatun Fm (also a lacustrine facies) in same region

Regional extent

The formation is distributed in the Bazhan area of Nenjiang County, Heilongjiang Province.

Fossils

Bivalves are represented by Palaeomutela and Palaeanodonta.


Age 

Originally the Bazhan Fm was assigned to the late Permian Epoch, but in 1993 the Geological Bureau of Heilongjiang Province decided to assign the formation to the Early Triassic Epoch.
